Here are the challenges for Round 1, which ends on February 18, 2008. Good luck to all the teams participating!!

CHALLENGE 1: Get your cameras ready!!!!!!
Tobacco advertising is everywhere, but especially at gas stations. Tobacco companies use these ads to target people as they complete every day activities – like getting gas. Tobacco advertisements are so abundant at gas stations that most people don’t even realize they are being targeted.

Prove us right by finding tobacco ads at your local gas stations. The ads can be in windows, by gas pumps or inside the stores. Take pictures of the ads with at least one member of your Team standing next to it. Then write a brief description of your activity, including the tobacco brands/ products being advertised and the date(s) when you completed the challenge.

Submit your pictures and description on www.projectsuso.com no later than Feb. 18, 2008. Teams that submit this challenge by the deadline and include the proper documentation, as described above, will earn 20 points.

CHALLENGE 2: Good with the internet searching?
Despite how it may seem, there are tons of laws dictating where tobacco companies can place their products. One of these laws dictates how high tobacco products must be placed in grocery stores, convenience stores and gas stations to avoid youth having access to them.

Your challenge is to find information about this law and determine the height requirement for tobacco products. Jot us a line describing the law and height requirement. Submit this description with a picture of your entire SUSO REMIX Team with each member sporting an item of stand or DEBUNKIFY gear.

Submit your pictures and description on www.projectsuso.com no later than Feb. 18, 2008. Teams that submit this challenge by the deadline and include the proper documentation, as described above, will earn 10 points.

CHALLENGE 3: Anyone got a tape measure….?
Convenience stores and gas stations are notorious for allowing tobacco companies to purchase shelf space in areas where teenagers have open access to their products, specifically single-sell products, like flavored cigars. Typically, not only are these products in a public area of the store, they are also located on low shelves where teenagers and young kids would have access to the products.

Discover how low tobacco products are located at two of your local convenience stores by heading into the store with a measuring tape and your camera. Find the area where tobacco products are located with open access to the public and measure how high they are located by measuring from the floor to the tobacco products. Take a picture of some of your Team members holding the measuring tape. Repeat this process at a second gas station or convenience store in your area. Take a least two pics at both stores and write a description documenting which gas stations/convenience stores you visited, the tobacco products available on the customer side of the counter, the heights you measured at both stores and if this complies with the law, and the date(s) when you completed the challenge.

Submit your pictures and description on www.projectsuso.com no later than Feb. 18, 2008. Teams that submit this challenge by the deadline and include the proper documentation, as described above, will earn 30 points.

CHALLENGE 4: Where does everyone really smoke in your town?

Passive exposure to tobacco refers to the fact that we barely even notice it in our environment anymore because it’s so engrained in our culture. However, this is one of the most dangerous types of cultural infiltration, because it causes us to accept the presence of tobacco in places where it’s totally not acceptable.

Your challenge is to find an area in your community where children or teenagers often hang out. When you get there, take a look around, specifically for tobacco products. Take some disposable plastic gloves and a container with you so you can pick up all the tobacco products lying around and show us just how much tobacco exists in the places kids and teenagers go most. Take at least 3 pictures of your Team members with the tobacco products at your teen-friendly location. Then write us a line describing the place you chose, where you found tobacco products and what types of products you found.

Submit your pictures and paragraph description on www.projectsuso.com no later than Feb. 18, 2008. Teams that submit this challenge by the deadline and include the proper documentation, as described above, will earn 30 points.
